Black text on this highly saturated purple background isn't readable.
When text contrasts poorly with its background, it makes reading more difficult, especially for people with low vision. The same goes for icons and situations where highlighting is used to draw attention (such as the hover effects on links).
You can normally tell when an element contrasts enough from its background just by eyeballing it.
Technically, in order to pass the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) guidelines, text must have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, except for larger text, which can use a 3:1 contrast ratio. You can use an online contrast checker to be certain your text meets standards.
